HD Antenna Guide: Cord-Cutting 101

HD antennas are the ideal counterpart to streaming digital content on your HDTV
FIND THE RIGHT ANTENNA

THE #1 CABLE TV ALTERNATIVE

Ready to join the cord-cutting movement? Streaming services and digital HD antennas are great by themselves, but even better together! Make sure your TV viewing experience is everything it should be by selecting the right antenna so you can start enjoying your favorite shows, live sports and blockbuster movies all for free in full HD. This guide will help you make the right choice, before you buy.

WHAT IS "CORD-CUTTING"?

Cord-cutting is the term used for anyone who cancels their cable or satellite subscription in favor of alternative options like streaming video services and antennas for free over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts.

HOW DOES OTA TV WORK?

The broadcasting station transmits programming from their studio to the high-power broadcasting towers generally located near most major urban areas. These towers then rebroadcast the signal to nearby homes where the signal can be picked up by their TV antennas.

WHY BUY AN ANTENNA?

Watch your favorite shows and prime-time sports in HD for FREE. HD antennas pick up TV signals for channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Fox and more, broadcasting more than half of the top 100 most-viewed shows in full HD. You'll also get better HD picture quality than with cable or satellite – and without any monthly bills or fees! FREEDOM!

Important Things to Consider

choosing the right HD Antenna

WHAT'S AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA

It's helpful to understand what channels are available in your area. Visit antennaweb.org and type in your zip code to find out exactly what channels you should expect to receive at your location.

WHAT CHANNELS DO YOU WANT?

Antennas can pick up UHF or VHF channels, but not always both. When choosing an antenna, it's best to select one that provides reception for both channel types.

WHERE WILL YOU PUT IT?

HD antennas are available for indoor use near your TV, in the attic or outside. Clear reception is primarily based on your distance from broadcast towers. Pointing your outdoor or attic antenna toward the broadcast towers or mounting your indoor antenna as high as possible or near a window usually results in best performance.

things to know about antennas

Quick facts cord-cutters should know:

  • TV RECEPTION: It’s all about location, location, location! Reception depends on factors such as the availability and strength of the original signal, the distance from the nearest broadcast tower(s), the direction(s) from which signals are coming and the presence of obstructions between towers and the antenna.

  • STORM & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: HD antennas often work better than satellite-based systems during storms, which can disrupt access to cable and satellite services. The internet, Wi-Fi and cell service may also be affected. A backup antenna helps you stay informed with access to important local broadcasts.

  • ANTENNA STYLES: Antennas come in various sizes, shapes, finishes and mounting options to fit your entertainment setup. For example, flat panel and bar antennas are usually affixed to interior walls, windows or even the top of the tv; tabletop antennas are placed on flat surfaces indoors; attic antennas are mounted to a wall stud in your home's attic; and outdoor antennas are installed on either the roof or a structure like a pole or tower.

  • THE BEST PICTURE POSSIBLE:  With free over-the-air TV, you'll get better HD picture quality than you can get with cable or satellite. Digital television broadcasts are uncompressed, delivering the best picture quality offered today.
  • LIVE TV EVENTS: Streaming devices and services are great, but most of them don’t cover live TV events. An HD antenna completes your cord-cutting experience by providing access to all your local news, sports, weather, sitcoms, kids programming and emergency broadcasts
  • NEXTGEN TV: Also known as ATSC 3.0, NEXTGEN TV is the third generation of digital TV technology from the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC). It seamlessly combines internet data with over-the-air broadcast signals to add superior HD performance and advanced data functionality to your home entertainment — and it's free! Check out some of its amazing features here.

What type of antenna is right for you?

ANTENNA TYPES

While an indoor antenna works well for most TV viewers, there are still many who live in areas that require an outdoor HD antenna— especially areas with mountainous or hilly terrain. Some indoor and outdoor TV antennas include a built-in signal amplifier. However, if you have a passive antenna and need to boost the broadcast signal, you can usually add an external amplifier to your setup.

INDOOR

From retro styles to slim, stylish designs with advanced features, indoor antennas require little to no assembly, blend with any home décor and add entertainment value. Indoor antennas are ideal for use in urban areas closer to broadcast towers.

OUTDOOR

Outdoor and attic antennas are ideal for use in low-signal areas. They typically experience less interference than indoor antennas and are perfect for receiving broadcast signals on every connected TV, providing whole-home entertainment.

PASSIVE OR AMPLIFIED?

Adding an amplifier to your passive antenna or buying an amplified antenna can strengthen broadcast signals and may improve reception. However, if you live in close proximity to broadcast towers or use multiple amplifiers, reception could worsen due to overamplification of the broadcast signal.
