The connected home continues to grow in popularity around the U.S.
The advancements that have taken place in the world of technology have essentially reshaped our lives. Not only do we rely on personal electronic devices to complete a variety of tasks, many people have begun integrating hi-tech automation into their homes as well.

It's clear that a lot of people are exploring ways to make where they live more technology friendly. Here's a brief overview of home automation trends and what to expect in 2015 and beyond:
- Electronic locks: How many times have you locked yourself out of your house because you've either lost your keys or forgot to pick them up before leaving your home? This is certainly not as uncommon as it seems, which is why Tech Home Builder wrote that the adoption of electronic locks will become increasingly popular. The website also stated that last year, 29 percent of homes had electronic locks and by 2016, this number is expected to reach 49 percent. This represents a growth of 20 percent. In addition, electronic locks are expected to become a standard in approximately 83 percent of homes over the next two years.
- Location beacons: This technology is slowly being integrated into our daily lives as we speak. For example, if you own an iPhone and you're near a Starbucks, your phone will alert you using a small icon in the lower left corner of the screen. Lights can automatically be turned on as you get closer to your house, doors can be unlocked, even the temperature in your home can be adjusted to be more comfortable for you when you walk in. The possibilities are limitless with this kind of functionality installed inside your home.
- Insurance savings: Homeowners insurance can be expensive. However, LifeRoome explained that people who use home automation can save as much as 20 percent on insurance costs. This represents a savings of approximately $1,154 annually, the website stated. This means having a connected home will eventually pay for itself.
- LED lighting: Tech Home Builder wrote that by next year, 80 percent of homes will feature LED lighting that can be controlled using an app or through a high-tech control panel installed inside of the house itself. Not only are LED lights more energy efficient, the ability to dim them, change the colors or have them turn on and off automatically when someone enters or leaves a room, is a cool factor that just can't be ignored.
- Smart outlets: This is another energy efficient idea that many homeowners will be interested in. Most times, when electronic items are plugged into a wall and not being used, you are still paying for standby power. However, Postscapes highlighted smart outlets that can turn plugged in electronics off and on, and even measure the amount of power used by everything from your coffee maker to the TV. This allows you to get a better sense of what your energy costs are, ultimately saving you money in the long run.
